EXIT LIST

01.11.11

ITV1 has ordered a “Raiders of the Lost Ark-style” gameshow, set in a giant 24-room maze, that challenges contestants to memorise the answers to questions in order to escape with up to £200,000 in prize money.

The Exit List is a 7 x 60-minute series due to air next year. It is produced by Sony Pictures-owned indies Gogglebox Entertainment and Victory Television, which was set up as an imprint this year by former SPT senior vice-president of creative development for international production Victoria Ashbourne.

The show starts filming next month at Elstree Studios, which Gogglebox exec producer Adam Wood said was “the only place that can house the massive set”.

BBC1 consumer affairs champion Matthew Allwright (Rogue Traders) hosts the show, in which pairs of contestants navigate a maze and accumulate cash by answering multiple-choice questions.

The further the contestants go in, the harder it is to get out – because to escape with the money, they must remember the ‘exit list’ of answers.

Getting a question right also gives them a single answer to remember for the list, while getting it wrong means they need to remember four possible answers, and makes their route through the maze more complicated.

Commissioners: Layla Smith, Elaine Bedell

The idea is to build up an exit list with as few answers to recall as possible so they can escape with the prize. Contestants can choose to accept a smaller prize if they don’t think they can remember the full list.

Gogglebox exec producer Adam Wood said The Exit List presented contestants with a tough dilemma. “They can turn back at any time so it becomes a question of how far they dare to push their memories in search of the big prize.”

The Exit List was ordered by ITV controller of entertainment Layla Smith and director of entertainment and comedy Elaine Bedell, with commissioning editor of entertainment Claire Horton managing the show. Victory’s Ashbourne will also exec produce.

Bedell said: “The Exit List is an exciting new concept and we are delighted to bring this innovative game of knowledge, memory and risk to ITV.”

The original format was created by David Grifhorst and is distributed internationally by Absolutely Independent. In August, ABC in the US was reported to be piloting the show.
